Congratulations to our newest Australian citizen, Susha Thomas, and to all nominees and winners of the Yass Valley 2023 Australia Day awards:

  • Mayoral Award for Volunteer Emergency Services - Yass SES, Sutton SES and Binalong VRA. Awarded by Mayor Allan McGrath for their flood recovery efforts throughout 2022
  • Volunteer of the Year - Wendy Dashwood
  • Community Group of the Year - Can Assist
  • Event of the Year - Yass Community Christmas Lights Display
  • Sportsperson of the Year - Sarah Watson
  • Young Citizen of the Year - Oliver Hughes
  • Citizen of the Year - Jean Frost.

Becoming an Australian citizen means an ongoing commitment to Australia and our shared values, one of which is community spirit. Community spirit is the deep knowledge that we are all connected; we are all a part of the fabric that makes the Yass Valley, NSW, and ultimately Australia great. But more than this, it’s about working together to get things done, to help those in need and show support for causes dear to our hearts such as our SES services, CanAssist, and the Yass Hospital Auxiliary. The winners of our Australia Day awards exemplify this spirit and provide good examples to the rest of us. Congratulations to all.
