On Tuesday 15th March 2022, representatives from Yass Branch CWA travelled to Goulburn to participate in the Goulburn Group NSW State Handicraft Exhibition. The aim of the Exhibition was to select the best handicrafts from Branches that make up the Goulburn Group (Yass, Crookwell, Braidwood, Queanbeyan, Tarago, Collector, Marulan, Goulburn and Mulwaree). These items are then sent to the NSW State Handicraft Exhibition, which is an annual competition to showcase the best work across NSW in a range of categories.

The Yass representatives, President Brenda Phillips and Handicrafts Officer Karen Smith presented the judges with eight items made by Yass CWA members in the following categories: hand embroidery, cardmaking, toys, dressmaking.

Each item was judged and given a score out of 100. To the delight of Ms Phillips and Ms Smith, Yass scored a total of 768 points, making it the Branch with the highest score in the Group, which meant that Yass Branch was awarded with a shiny trophy to mark its success.

Two of the items made by members of Yass Branch were given scores of 98 per cent: a delicately cross-stitched folio made by Ms Phillips, and a set of six fabric dolls representing eras since the CWA was formed in 1922, made by Ms Smith. A third item, a girl’s dress made by Ms Smith was given a score of 97 per cent. These three items, the folio, the dolls, and the dress were selected by the judges to go to Sydney and compete in the NSW State Handicraft Exhibition.

At the end of the day, participants learned there were three items that were scored highest in the NSW State Handicraft Exhibition: Ms Philips folio, Ms Smith’s dolls, and an intricate tote bag made by a member of the CWA Braidwood Branch. A trophy was awarded to both Yass and Braidwood to mark these high scoring items.

Both Ms Phillips and Ms Smith said that the wins were just what Yass Branch needed. “We’ve been through so much over the last two years, with COVID and COVID lockdowns, and this is just the good news that we need to bring a sense of hope and energy to members,” Ms Phillips said.

Congratulations to Yass Branch, and we look forward to hearing how it fares in the NSW State Handicraft Exhibition later this month.
