You may have seen on TV that preparations are underway for five NSW by-elections to fill vacancies in the Legislative Assembly arising from the resignations of four members of the Coalition state government and a former Labor leader. The districts of Bega, Monaro, Strathfield and Willoughby held bi-elections on the 12th February 2022. The Holsworthy bi-election will likely be held after the federal election, as the sitting MP has not yet resigned.

The causes of the bi-elections are as follows:

  • Bega: the resignation of sitting Liberal MP Andrew Constance to contest the federal seat of Gilmore following the resignation of NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian in October 2021.
  • Holsworthy: the resignation of sitting Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons, who announced that she would resign from Holsworthy at the time of the next federal election to contest the federal seat of Hughes.
  • Monaro: the resignation of sitting Nationals MP John Barilaro, then Deputy Premier, Nationals leader and member for Monaro in early October 2021 after the resignation of NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian.
  • Strathfield: the retirement of sitting Labor MP Jodi McKay, who announced her retirement from parliament in October 2021, following her loss of the Labor leadership in May 2021.
  • Willoughby: the resignation of sitting Liberal MP Gladys Berejiklian, who resigned as NSW premier and flagged her upcoming resignation from parliament on 1 October 2021 after the Independent Commission Against Corruption announced an investigation into her conduct.
