Relationships Australia (RA) has released the results of its “Relationship Indicators 2022” report. The report involved surveying 3,140 respondents to explore the most important and meaningful relationship people have in their lives, and the pressures and tensions that impact on this relationship.

The results show that partners, mothers and friends play a central role in almost 78 per cent of respondent’s lives, and that respondents were more likely to identify the relationships with the women in their families as their most important.

Mr Nick Tebbey, RA’s National Executive Officer noted that “The survey results indicate that external pressures place a significant burden on relationships”.

For example:

  • A quarter of respondents cited work or study commitments put pressure on their most important relationships
  • One in five respondents cited money problems as a pressure affecting relationships
  • 17.8 per cent said the impact of the pandemic affected them
  • 2.1. per cent said mental health was a challenge in their relationship.

The survey found a concerning rise in loneliness, with men saying they found it difficult to create strong and fulfilling relationships.
