Shonkys-Awards-2022

Have you heard of CHOICE Magazine? It’s a magazine published by CHOICE Australia, a consumer advocate that gives Australians information and advice, free from commercial bias.

For seventeen years CHOICE has conducted the “Shonky Awards”, which recognise the worst of the worst products and services taking advantage of Australians.

The 2022 Shonky Awards were recently announced. CHOICE CEO, Alan Kirkland explained, “2022 has been a difficult year, with Australians living through a pandemic, a slew of natural disasters, and a cost-of-living crisis. The last thing people need is businesses that add more distress, difficulty and disappointment to their lives – but unfortunately that’s exactly what we’ve seen in this year’s Shonky Awards.”

The 2022 CHOICE Shonky Awards went to…

  • Qantas: for flight delays, poor baggage handling, and mismanagement of travel credits accumulated from COVID-related travel cancellations.
  • VetPay: for lack of transparency about high interest rates and numerous fees charged to desperate pet owners.
  • Steggles Chicken Nuggets Boosted with Veggies: for hardly containing any vegetables. These nuggets contain just 14g of veggies per 100g serve, which is less than a fifth of one serving of vegetables. This means the kids would need to eat the entire 400g pack of nuggets plus a portion of a second pack to get just one whole serving of vegetables.
  • Bloomex: for low-quality flowers and late delivery.
  • Zega Digital Cookware: for a self-cooking pot that doesn’t actually cook.
