“Spring has sprung and the grass has ris”

Man mowing lawn

What do you associate with summer? For many of us, it’s the smell of freshly cut grass and the sound of motor mowers on a Saturday. With the excellent rainfall we’ve been experiencing, it’s true that “Spring has sprung and the grass has ris” and then some! It’s important therefore to make sure that you are on top of your lawn, and not the other way around, because long grass can hide creepy crawlies, look unsightly, and is harder to decompose once it is cut by virtue of its size.

If you find that your mower is not up to the job, or that mowing is getting beyond your capabilities, there are various options available to you.

The first option is to engage a professional lawn mowing service to do the job for you. Things to be aware of here are that the mowing service has insurance, and the capacity to mow your lawn as required – anything from once every three to six weeks. Don’t forget to ask for extras such as brush cutting and edging (as required), and to find out what happens to your lawn clippings. You might want to retain them for composting purposes.

The second option is to upgrade your mower. If you have a larger property, or you find that a number of your neighbours are in the same position as yourself, you might consider purchasing a ride on mower (either individually or collectively). Ask around to find out the type and brand of mower that is more suitable for your purposes. Look out for ride on mowers that have nice, tight turning circles, as they will enable you to get up close to plants and trees dotted across your lawn.

The third option is to have your mower serviced. There are a number of businesses in the Yass Valley that can service your existing mower to make it more fuel efficient and ensure the blades are nice and sharp. This will reduce the amount of time that mowing takes.

Whatever option you chose, take care of your health by making sure that you don’t mow in the heat of the day. Take a jug of water and glass outside and put them by the shade of a shed or bush and while you are mowing, have regular drinks to keep hydrated.
