Meet Your Neighbour Nicolas Whiting

What do you do for a living?
I work as a Deputy Captain at the Yass Fire and Rescue Station, and I also have a digital marketing and web development business, called “Superb Marketing”.

When did you join the Yass Fire and Rescue? Why did you join?
I joined in 2016, and I was inspired to join because my Step-Father, Matt Carroll, was also part of Fire and Rescue. Matt is an inspiring leader as a former member of the NSW Police Force, and has a strong commitment to serving the community. The Captain, Scott Lang, also reached out to me and encouraged me to join. Scott is also a good leader and has built a great team.

What have been the benefits of working for Yass Fire and Rescue?
Joining meant that I work in a fantastic team. It’s a family environment and we all help each other inside and outside of the Station. It’s a job that’s taken me out of my comfort zone and has taught me so many new skills.

What do Fire and Rescue firefighters in Yass typically do?
Apart from attending fires, we go to motor vehicle accidents, help paramedic crews, and engage with the community about fire safety, for example running sessions at schools, retirement and nursing homes.

You’ve got some positions vacant at present. How do people apply?
To receive an information pack and apply for these positions, go to the following website: On-call Firefighters - Fire and Rescue NSW or call 1800 347 437.
