This week we are profiling the talented amateur photographer, Judith Perkins, from Murrumbateman.

Judith explains that she originally attended art college in Canberra with a view to becoming an art teacher, but the lure of earning money to fund her equestrian interests led her to take up a job offer with Division of Wildlife Research as an illustrator and taxidermist. With several different career directions in later years, she didn’t pursue her creative side until she took up photography about five years ago.

Judith says, “I consider myself to be an amateur photographer but have held exhibitions at The Old Bakery Gallery at Binalong and at The Bower Birds at Gold Creek, Canberra.” In June this year Judith has scheduled a shared exhibition at One Arts Gallery on the Gold Coast, called “Recovery and Resilience”. Judith will be exhibiting images captured in 2019, 2020 and 2021 reflecting the tragedy of the bushfires, drought and weather conditions and the recovery and resilience of the land, vegetation and people.

Judith is a long-term resident of the Southern Tablelands and has resided within Yass Valley for some 12 years. Judith absolutely loves Murrumbateman, explaining that “It’s the camaraderie of the residents, the village markets as a social meeting place, the historic enchantment of the region with its old buildings, gold mining and bushrangers… there is a story around every corner.”

Judith’s passion for the village is clear in her stunning photographs “I have a passion for our sunrises and sunsets – these feature often in my images with each day being different to the next, especially with the light and colour changes at different hours of the day. The colours and smells of a eucalypt grove after rain or a hot summer’s day entices me to find that perfect shot – I am hooked!” she said.
