Meet a Council Candidate Steve Crabb

Tell us a little about yourself
I have lived in Murrumbateman for over 20 years and feel passionately about the environment and my local community.

Living in Murrumbateman means I have built strong friendships with people all over Yass Valley through my active volunteering with the RFS, Landcare and other community-based organisations. These relationships with people from varying backgrounds (i.e., farmers, tradies, retirees, commuters, parents, etc.) have given me a good appreciation for the concerns of our community and I want to do something about these.

Why are you standing for election?
I'm standing because I think having a few Greens on Council would be very good for our community. We strongly believe in looking after our environment, encouraging sustainable development, and collaborating with others. You just have to look at the ACT and some of our neighbouring councils to see how effective the Greens can be in collaboration with others.

What changes would you like to see in the Yass Valley over the next three years?
The big issues requiring change are water, development and decision-making processes by Council.

On water, we would like to see more urgent action taken to fix our town’s water quality, without increasing our rates. The current Council plans seem to see increases in rates as inevitable.

On development, people tell me that this is a bit out-of-control at present, with too much weight given to vested interests such as developers and not enough weight given to the views of locals. We recognise that under current State legislation, there are stringent constraints on how much control councils have in this regard. So, we would work both at State and local government levels to change this so that locals have more of a say.

On decision-making, we would work hard with other councillors to be more transparent and consultative regarding decisions taken by Council.

How can people get in touch with you about their concerns?
