Our Yass Valley Council candidate this week is Adrienne Steward, who is running as an Independent

Tell us a little bit about yourself
I have been living in Yass for five years now with my partner and two children. I own a small business and I am also a co-founder of Yass Business Mums and Friends, a free networking group for local businesses.

I’m passionate about the Yass Valley and our wonderful, caring community. In fact, during the bushfires of 2019-2020 I established the Yass Bushfire Relief Centre to collect and distribute donations to affected areas. I was amazed by the number of people who came to the Centre with car loads of supplies – bottles of water, food, pet supplies – you name it. We donated the supplies to the nearby Batlow and Tumut areas as well as coastal towns. We also had people travelling through town who had left bushfire-affected areas. They visited us at the Centre, and I still hear from them today. The generosity of Yass Valley citizens has not been forgotten.

Why are you running for Council?
I believe that the Yass Valley is at a crucial point in its history. We have seen rapid growth in many of our towns over the last few years, and yet changes to our infrastructure to support growth have been inefficient and problematic

I believe that the diverse qualities I bring to the role – a strong commitment to the community, persistence, excellent communication skills, and my career experience in government, project delivery, administration, and small business – are just what Council needs.

What changes would you like to see to the Yass Valley over the next three years?
I would like to see promises made by Council to the Yass Valley community fulfilled eg. Pool upgrades, Learn to Ride Park and Main Street Masterplan completed. The Main Street Masterplan was released long before the recent Crago Mill redesign, and I’d like to see the realisation of changes to Comur Street before work commences on the Crago Mill. The Main Street Masterplan needs to be completed as a priority before design work takes place on the Crago Mill Precinct so that it can inform/guide the Crago Mill Precinct development, not the other way around.

How can people get in touch with you about their concerns?
