Local Land Services is reminding the Yass and Boorowa communities that it is illegal to take firewood from Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs).

“We all enjoy a nice fire when it gets cold, but it is important that you source your wood legally,” said South East Local Land Services Yass and Boorowa area local manager Chris Harris.

There are hefty fines for anyone caught removing timber or disturbing vegetation from a TSR. The Local Land Services Act 2013 helps protect the integrity of the network of TSRs, which is recognised as an asset of state significance with agricultural, social, cultural and ecological values.

“We’ve been getting reports of illegal collecting around Boorowa and Yass, we’ll be monitoring these areas continuously.

“We need to make sure there is a clear understanding in the community about the importance of TSRs and their long-term viability,” Mr Harris said.

Members of the public are asked to report any illegal activity to Local Land Services on 1300 795 299, or to contact NSW Police on 131 444. Please take note of registration numbers, descriptions, locations and dates to assist in the prosecution of offenders.

TSRs are clearly signposted, but if you are unsure of the status of a piece of land, please contact the Yass Local Land Services office on 1300 795 299.

Members of the public can apply for a permit to collect firewood from selected state forests.
