Get Ready Get Set Its Nearly Movember Time!

  • Have you heard about “Movember”?
  • Want to participate in boosting men’s health and wellbeing?
  • Think that Movember is purely for men? Think again.

Movember is a movement that started in Melbourne in 2003, when two friends (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) had a conversation over a beer about bringing the moustache back into fashion. The friends talked to their mates about growing a moustache, and then, inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. They designed the rules of Movember, Travis designed the first Movember logo, and they sent around an email titled ‘Are you man enough to be my man?’ They found 30 guys willing to take up the challenge. Those first 30 Mo Bros grew their moustaches with such enthusiasm that in 2004 a decision was made to formalise the concept and get all participants growing for a cause.

Since those first few years, Movember has continued to grow at an extraordinary pace. There are now official campaigns in 21 countries and together over AUD 730 million has been raised to fund over 1,000 men’s health programs. The organisation’s focus has broadened to four key men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

Movember involves people signing up to:

  • ‘Grow a mo in Movember’, which involves people sponsoring you to grow your ‘tash.
  • ‘Move for Movember’, which involves people sponsoring you to walk or run 60km over the month.
  • Host an event to raise funds for Movember.
  • ‘Mo your own way’, which involves setting yourself a challenge and donating to the Movember cause.
