The Federal Government has extended project construction timelines for Phases 1–3 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

Councils across Australia will now have until 30 June 2024 to complete works, giving them an extra year on the LRCI construction timeframes for all three phases.

Catherine King, the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, explained, “Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the impacts of trade and material shortages and supply chain delays have weighed heavily on those working to complete crucial infrastructure projects – and our councils are no exception.

“Many councils are also dealing with the impacts of recent flooding, particularly in regional, rural and remote areas – while others are still working to recover from other extreme weather events over the last 12 months.

“We have listened and we have acted, with the Australian Government proud to support councils to deliver the vital projects their communities need and deserve.

“This extension will give councils additional time to bring to life projects, such as upgraded roads, parks and sporting facilities, community halls, bike paths and playgrounds, making for safer and more enjoyable communities.”
