Essential Equipment for Kids in the Kitchen

• Is one of your parenting goals to lead your child to independence?
• Do you want your child to have the confidence to prepare simple meals?
• Do you want to enable your child’s creativity?

If so, there's no time like the school holidays.

The following is a list of activities that children from the ages of 2 to 5 years can undertake in the kitchen with your supervision. In order to enable your child to successfully undertake these activities, it is recommended that you purchase the appropriately sized equipment that is robust enough to last for a few years:

Kitchen ActivityKid’s Kitchen Equipment
Stirring batter in a bowlA wooden spoon with a handle that is 10-12 cms long. You can easily cut down the handle of a small-bowled wooden spoon to make it easier for your child to manipulate.
Rinsing fruits and vegetablesA non slip stool to enable your child to comfortably work in the sink and on the benchtop.
Cutting soft fruits and vegetablesA child-friendly knife. For this piece of equipment, we recommend going to a specialty kitchenware shop and talking to the owner about the variety of children’s knives available.
Rolling pastryA child-sized rolling pin. These can often be purchased second hand at a charity shop. Otherwise, a good toy shop or a specialty kitchenware shop should be your next port of call.
Using cookie and biscuit cuttersChildren can use any cookie cutters as long as they don’t have razor sharp edges. Look for cookie cutters with clearly defined handles if your child is particularly young.
Whisking pancake batterA specialty kitchenware shop will be able to help you to find a small wire whisk - a cocktail whisk is perfect for littlies.
Measuring and pouring liquid and dry ingredientsLook for measuring cups and spoons that are clearly marked.
Spreading butter on breadPurchase a child’s cutlery set. The knife in the set will be perfect for your child to spread butter etc. on their bread.
Mashing potatoes and other cooked vegetablesCheck with the speciality kitchenware shop for smaller potato mashers.

Assembling age-appropriate cooking equipment doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise, nor does it have to be completed in a single day.

Check out our local charity shops and make friends with kitchenware shop proprietors. They may often go out of their way to source hard to find items for you.
