Call for Women to Run for Council

Women to run for council

Did you know that women currently represent only 31 per cent of NSW local councillors? This is particularly surprising given that NSW women support their communities in so many ways - from running school P&Cs, building and expanding local businesses, overseeing local sports competitions and community campaigns to co-ordinating drought and bushfire relief for neighbours and local businesses.

The 2021 NSW local government election is scheduled to be held on Saturday 4th September, and local women are encouraged to put their hand up to run as councillors. Minister for Women, Bronnie Taylor, said that “We all know that decisions made at a local government level have an incredible effect on our communities. With more women involved, we have the opportunity for a more balanced view, one that reflects our communities and leads to better outcomes.”

To help equip women for councillor roles, funding has been allocated to the Australian Local Government Women’s Association NSW Branch and Women for Election Australia to stage a series of workshops for prospective female candidates. The closest workshop for interested Yass Valley women is being held in Goulburn on Friday 7th May 2021, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, and women can register this participation by going to: GOULBURN :: EQUIP women for Local Government elections in NSW | Workshop Series, Workspace Goulburn, 7th of May | Humanitix
