Last week it was announced that in early 2023 Stephen Page will step down as the Artistic Director of Bangarra Dance Company, and that Frances Rings, a Kokatha woman, and current Assistant Artistic Director, will step into the vacant role.

For those not in the know, Bangarra is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies, widely acclaimed nationally and around the world for its powerful dancing, distinctive theatrical voice and utterly unique soundscapes, music and design. The company’s dancers are professionally trained, dynamic artists who represent the pinnacle of Australian dance. Each has a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background, from various locations across the country.

The great news is that Bangarra is coming to the Canberra Theatre Centre on 28th – 30th July 2022 to perform its award-winning Terrain. Choreographed by Frances Rings, Terrain is a breathtaking exploration of Lake Eyre, Australia’s largest salt lake.

Bangarra invites the audience to watch this nine-part performance that evokes the power of body and land converging to bring spirit to place, “Stand with us and feel the ancestral ties that bind people to Country: a rich cultural spine stretching through the generations. Watch the waters rise and fall as we reconnect with the energy of land and the resilient spirit of the people who care for its future”.

The audience will be spellbound by David Page’s irrepressible score, enjoy the textures of Kati Thanda in Jacob Nash’s sets, appreciate Jennifer Irwin’s clever costumes and the evocative lighting provided by Karen Norris.

Arabunna Elder, Reginald Dodd, acted as Cultural Consultant for Terrain by sharing his role in caring for the land, waters and precious cultural resources of the region.
